Biography
b.1976
Venezuela
I am a Houston-based artist who was born and raised in Venezuela. I have a college degree in Advertising and Public Relations from University of Zulia, Maracaibo, Venezuela. I have always looked for ways to point my career towards the world of art. Back in 1998,I worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia (MACZUL), where I had the opportunity to learn details on the dynamic of the exhibitions process inside of a Museum. Through this experience I also developed a visual sensitivity to 3 dimensional forms. However, my initiative and motivation went beyond. My art career has always had an important and strong educational orientation. I started an art school and taught art and creativity to kids for almost 10 years.
I have lived in different countries, which has enriched my art career. I moved back to Houston in 2011 and have been enhancing since then my art education at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts.
As a sculptor, I am a young emerging artist, full of projects, which I have been consolidating step by step. I have developed sculptures and installations in different materials, such as wood, aluminum and plexiglass, in diverse sizes from urban to small dimensions. I have been participating in several group exhibitions in Texas, Miami, Washington DC, Panama, Venezuela and also exhibited in numerous invitational and juried shows in different cities. In 2014 I was awarded 1st Place with my sculpture “Allegro Yellow” in a Juried Show in my hometown Maracaibo, Venezuela. I had the opportunity to share art spaces with a wide group of talented Venezuelan artists, and was recognized by an important group of jurors from the local art scene. Also, that year I was recognized with the 2nd Place in Sculpture at the Juried Show Scopes at Curator’s Voice Art Projects Gallery in Miami, USA.
Artist Statement
I locate my art into a neo-minimalist field with strong rectangular shapes superimposed each one on top of the other following the golden ratio. I look for the aesthetic of beauty and the harmonic consolidation of the rectilinear form.
My recent Allegro and Impromptu Series are inspired by music and its melodic dynamism. Each of my works aligns into a musical movement echoing an imaginary musical pentagram. Actually, my first sketch for a sculpture was based in a melody that I transferred into lines and shapes, and then transferred into a 3D work. Each piece has a different “timbre”.
Music is intrinsically represented in my pieces through repetition, alteration and a combination of forms, lines and colors. I combine and re-combine them into different rectangular units resulting in a levitating composition that give each piece a special reverberation. Bright colors are also an important element to the musical resonance in my creation. Each color has a visual vibration that hints into melodious rhythms.
I want to create pieces that enrich life. I always say: “A sculpture is a space that you steal from the universe…”
Each person has a different way to perceive a piece. In my work you can be captivated by the form or by the color, or by both. The important thing is to get immerse in them.
“My goal through my work is to develop an experience
that let us discover a new way of art,
where being the protagonist,
you can create your own symphony.”
