Biography

Lives and works in New York, NY

"Ms. Garrett has been working miracles in her studio, making visible on canvas and paper what might be called the dance of the universe, with its rhythms and eruptions of energy, immersed in an expansive and luminous space."
-Dorothy Seiberling, former art editor, Life magazine

Born in North Carolina and raised in Pennsylvania, Margaret Garrett currently lives and maintains a studio on Shelter Island, New York. A former dancer, Garrett found something spiritually akin to dance in the movement of line and color. Margaret Garrett’s work is held in the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall Museum, and in numerous private and corporate collections in the United Kingdom and throughout the United States. Her work has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and art fairs, including the Parrish Art Museum, the Heckscher Museum, Danese/Corey, the Armory Show, Art Miami, and Texas Contemporary.

Artist Statement

My childhood was spent training to be a dancer. It was my first identity and my first mode of expression as an artist and one that continues to inform my paintings to this day. When I begin working on a new piece, I see the paper or canvas as an empty stage and the line as movement: texture, form, the way that colors interact, are all different manifestations of motion and energy. My excitement in finding a true or honest line, one that is both formal and expressive, has increasingly led me to more involvement with drawing in my paintings.

I tend to work in ongoing series, exploring ideas on paper until I find one I want to pursue further. I began my ”Tuning Fields” series in 2008 and these pieces, works on paper and paintings, now number over three hundred. In this series, I am working with line-driven layers of color and rhythm to create loose yet formal fields of motion that are abstract and at the same time evocative of shapes and patterns found in nature.
