Carlos Canul
Dancing Across the Abyss
June 12 - July 10, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, June 12 from 6pm to 8pm
Samara Gallery is pleased to present Dancing Across the Abyss, a solo exhibition of new works by Carlos Canul. The artist’s most recent works develop a visual language that evokes mythic narrative. Referencing surrealism, ancient mythologies, and historic events, the drama and mysteries of Canul’s subjects unfold as each painting peers into the abyss.
The artist writes, “Dancing Across the Abyss is a reference to our ancient past relationship with cosmos. Mythologies were born from our close ties to the heavens, and through the painting process I challenge myself to develop a visual dialogue between art and spectator. As time moves forward and our physical realms cease to occupy our time, our universal consciousness continues to dance across the cosmic abyss.” Canul’s body of work depends on drawing and watercolors that eventuate his oil paintings. His process with oils invokes tidal forces of creation, destruction, and back again as creation, bringing forth the soul and physical visions in each work.
Carlos Canul received a BFA from Southern Methodist University in 2000, and a MFA from Houston Baptist University this year. Canul’s art is found in many public collections, and has previously shown locally, nationally, and internationally.
